Major Research Interests

We develop and apply novel solid-state NMR methods for the characterization of biomolecular structure and dynamics. In particular, we are interested in membrane proteins embedded in lipid bilayers. For example, we are studying the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) that is located in the mitochondrial outer membrane and constitutes the major pathway for the transport of ADP, ATP, and other metabolites. Another focus of our research is on the structural characterization of aggregates formed by the proteins tau and alpha-synuclein that are involved in neurodegenerative diseases. In terms of methodology the focus is on new experiments using fast magic-angle spinning with the goal to further improve resolution and sensitivity of solid-state NMR spectroscopy.
