Guest lectures: To enhance the learning experience for students and complement the content of the course with unique insights from international academia and industry practice, guest lectures will take place from time to time in this course during the semester.
May 5th, 2011: Prof. Balaji Rajagopalan, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Management Information Systems at Oakland University, USA, will join us to give a guest lecture on global sourcing strategy. Prof. Rajagopalan is an internationally renowned expert and scientist in the field of global sourcing of IT & IT enabled services, virtual communities, open source software development and adoption, and business value of information technology, among others. He teaches management of global sourcing of IT & IT enabled services, IT project management, as well as decision support systems. Prof. Rajagopalan has published his research in some of the leading IS journals of our field, including the top journal Information Systems Research. Being originally from India, the world’s #1 location for offshoring IT services, he now works in the U.S. and specializes among others on the topic of this course.

Course content at a glance: Global sourcing of business and information technology (IT) services continues to grow in importance as information and communication technologies enable international collaboration on a broader scale than ever before. The course focuses on organizational global sourcing strategies and practices in Europe, Americas, and Asia Pacific in the context of increasing globalization of organizational intent, capabilities, and sources of service supply. The course provides an understanding of how international business is pursued, convergence and differences across organizations and countries, business strategies and alignment with IT strategies and sourcing approaches, and how sourcing of business and IT services is managed, focusing especially on outsourcing and offshoring decisions and implementations. The course draws on a range of theoretical perspectives, including strategic, economic, and social theories, as well as real world examples from managerial practice. The goal of the course is to help you implement a global sourcing strategy for your organization and develop the necessary competencies and skills in managing the global sourcing of business and IT services.

About the Instructor: Dr. Robert Wayne Gregory holds an assistant professor position at the University of Göttingen, at the Chair of E-Finance and Electronic Markets. He completed his doctoral degree at the University of Frankfurt (E-Finance Lab, House of Finance) in August 2010 and the title of his dissertation was “Management and Evolution of Global Sourcing Relationships”.

Type of Learning: Theoretical content will be taught in weekly lectures. In addition, during the course we will analyze several case studies (based on best practices from Harvard Business School), with heavy emphasis on student interaction and participation. The case studies will introduce students to a variety of sourcing decisions (e.g., sourcing options, contracts, governance forms) and managerial issues (e.g., cross-cultural, strategic, relationship and project management). Furthermore, the selected case studies deal with global sourcing issues in and across different continents (e.g., EU, USA, Asia).

Class Participation: This course is based on a model of active learning, with class discussions and exercises playing a central role. Students are expected to read the assigned material, and to carefully prepare for the cases to be discussed in class. Details will be given in the first lecture. The preparation should include the following three things: 1) What does each assigned reading or case say? What is the central issue/theme/point that is conveyed? 2) What have you learned? What has it added to your knowledge/understanding of the subject? What connections did you make to your experience? 3) Tie the reading or case into the larger set of materials on the subject in the course.
If you are concerned that a difficulty with English or some other situation will interfere with your ability to participate in class, please discuss this with me during the first week of the course. I recognize that expressing viewpoints in a group is difficult for some people, but it is an important skill for you to develop here at the university. I will do what I can to make this as anxiety-free as possible.

Evaluation: Students will have to take a 90 minute exam at the end of the semester. Knowledge about the implementation of an organizational global sourcing strategy and the necessary competencies and skills in managing the global sourcing of business and IT services will be tested. While the exam questions will be provided in English only, students will be allowed to respond in German or English, reducing the barrier for German native speakers to participate in this course and allowing them to focus entirely on the content quality of their answers in the exam.
