General Objectives

In Europe, agricultural production is more and more an issue on the public agenda. We have to accept the need for increased efficiency, sustainability and resilience of our agricultural production, while at the same time meeting the emerging challenges of ‘feeding the world’, ‘food versus fuel’, ‘biodiversity,’ and ‘climate change’. This conference focussed on the development of new crop breeding strategies to improve crop nutrient use efficiency, as one strategy to address these challenges.
The program includes the first results of the NUE-CROPS project (Improving nutrient efficiency in major European food, feed and biofuel crops to reduce the negative environmental impact of crop production; EU-FP7 222-645). The conference closed with a panel discussion “Where do we go next with R and D into nutrient use efficiency?”

These subtopics were dealt with

  • Root system
  • N efficiency
  • P efficiency
  • Other minerals
  • Screening methods
  • Marker assisted selection
  • G x E interaction
  • Impact on food quality
