Beschreibung Miniaturized implantable devices applying light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are highly innovative tools for optogenetic research providing promising opportunities towards translational clinical applications. The integrated LEDs, emitting blue light around 460 nm being optimal for optogenetic applications based on chanalrhodopsin-2, are implemented either as unpackaged LED chips or thin-film µLEDs. They are applied on stiff silicon shanks or flexible polymeric substrates dedicated for a variety of in vivo applications in neuroscience, the restoration of sensory function and cardiology.
The talk will discuss the key fabrication processes used to realize these tools, discuss opportunities to improve light extraction from the µLEDs and address aspects such as device reliability and temperature loads during LED operation. Exemplary in vivo applications targeting hearing loss with an optical cochlear implant based on an array of µLEDs on an all-epoxide substrate and cardiac pacing using penetrating light tools will be discussed.
