Coaching Competencies for Effective Leadership

Coaching is an art of conversation in which the coach facilitates a person to discover their own solutions to a challenge they are facing, rather than giving them advice. If you are a mentor, supervisor, or head of a team, you are likely to be approached often for help and guidance. Your first impulse may be to give consultation, which is advice based on your own expertise and experience. However, to enhance the growth and autonomy of the people you lead it may sometimes be beneficial for you to take a coaching-style approach instead. Used appropriately, this approach can increase the level of satisfaction and confidence you experience in your leadership role.

In this two-day workshop you will learn to identify situations where coaching or consultation are appropriate and gain core competencies for coaching, such as listening, asking questions and structuring conversations. You will have the opportunity to practice your newly acquired skills by coaching fellow members in a confidential setting and receive valuable feedback as you do so. Towards the end of the workshop, you will have the option of forming a peer-coaching group with other workshop participants, so that you can continue to practice coaching each other in the post-workshop phase if you wish to.
