Gastwissenschaftler am Seminar für Altes Testament
As holder of a research fellowship granted by the Fulbright Association, Stephen Long (University of Notre Dame, USA) will spend a one-year fellowship at the Faculty of Theology, Department of Old Testament Studies.
In cooperation with Prof. Reinhard Kratz Stephen Long is investigating the development of early Judaism in regard to practices of benefaction and reciprocity, focusing on the Jewish writer of "wisdom instruction" known as Ben Sira. This sage had much to say explicitly about money, gift-giving, and reciprocity: accordingly, his study examines the relevant passages in detail, and attempts to understand them in relation to the sage's overtly "theological" statements to the effect that God is a "God of repayment" (Sir 35:13).
