Master thesis

Admission for master thesis

Requirement for admission for the master thesis is that you have earned at least 78 credits, among those all compulsory and at least four mandatory modules.
You musst apply for admission in written form and with the following documents:


  • Proof of passed modules (see above)
  • Proposal for thesis topic
  • Proposal for first and second supervisor
  • Written confirmation by both supervisors


Thesis writing

The time frame for thesis writing is 22 weeks.

The master thesis must usually be written in English. (You can apply for another official language of the European Union if your supervisors agree.)


Extension of Period

As an exception, you can apply for an extension of the thesis writing period of up to 30 weeks (total writing period). The application must contain an important reason (e.g. ill health). It must be brought forward before the end of the regular period, and the supervisor must agree with it.

Assessment

The thesis will usually be assessed by the two supervisors within 3 weeks after you have handed it in. In case of disagreement between the supervisors’ marks of more than 2,0, a third examiner will assess the thesis. The same applies if one of the supervisors assesses the thesis as „failed“.

In case the master thesis is assessed as „failed“, it can be repeated only once.

Remarks

One of the supervisors must be an habilitated (qualified as a professor) and authorized examiner of the agricultural faculties of Kassel or Goettingen Universities.

The master thesis can be conducted as a group work. The contribution of the individual to the group must clearly distinguishable and seperately assessable.

Colloquium to the master thesis

The colloquium will usually take place within six weeks after handing in the thesis.
It consists of an introductory presentation (about 30 minutes) and a discussion (about 30 minutes) of the master thesis. Its purpose is to prove that the examinee is able to cope with interdisciplinary and problem-specific questions on a scientific basis and is able to put them into context with the field of agricultural sciences.
