Aim: Understanding of palaeoecological data and its uncertainties; Overview on numerical methods and statistical tests commonly used with this datasets; Insights into current questions in palaeoecological research
Skills: Ability to work with multivariate data; Utilization of pollen databases to answer ecological questions; Application of numerical methods in descriptive data analysis and hypothesis testing; Introduction to software packages as well as experience working with Excel and R
Palaeoecological investigations yield the number plant or animal remains per sample and thus multivariate datasets are generated, which are often difficult to interpret. Multivariate analysis methods can help disentangle past vegetation and ecosystem processes often hidden in the complexities of paleoecological data. A peculiarity of palaeoecological data is their time component, which allows or demands a number of specific techniques. The module will introduce exploratory data analysis that can lead to the formulation of hypothesis, which may be tested using statistical techniques. Many datasets are held in relevant databases, which will be introduced and these datasets as well as new data from individual participants may be used during the exercises. Lectures and exercises will focus on timely problems and new approaches in palaeoecological research.
