Bachelor and Master Degree Programmes in Applied Computer Science
| Goals | |
| It is impossible to imagine academic research and everyday life as we know it without computer science. Both knowledge of computer science and an understanding of the problems concerning its implementation are necessary for the development and mastery of appropriate systems. As a result, professional computer scientists very often have to become acquainted with fields of knowledge that are unfamiliar to them at first in order to be able to offer effective computer science solutions. | |
| Our course of study provides for this through our close cooperation with other university faculties. The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science offers instruction in (core-)computer science and mathematics. Other cooperating faculties (e.g. the Faculty of Economic Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Geoscience, etc.) offer instruction in different areas of concentration. Fields of knowledge that fall between core computer science and a concentration are categorized as Applied Computer Science (as the logo for our degree programs suggests) and are offered either through the Institute of Computer Science or one of our cooperating institutions. | |
| Structure of the Degree Programme | |
| The Bachelor’s degree is usually completed in six semesters, while the Master’s programme normally lasts four semesters. Both degree programmes are structured in modules, that is, groups of content-related course offerings that usually last one semester and end with an examination. After passing the examination, you will receive a certain number of credits for the module. For the “Bachelor of Science” or “Master of Science” degree, you must earn a certain total number of credits, and this must include a specific number of credits from core computer science, your area of concentration, and applied computer science. The final grade is determined by the grades earned in all modules. | |

| Possible Areas of Concentration | |
We recommend that you begin to choose one or two areas of concentration (e.g. Bioinformatics or Medical Computer Science) by the time you start your second semester so that you can begin planning this area of concentration into your course of study by your third semester at the latest. There are two options for constructing your course of study:

| Informatik der Ökosysteme | |
| Die Studienrichtung Informatik der Ökosysteme beschäftigt sich mit Informatik-Anwendungen und speziellen Verfahren im Bereich der Ökosystemforschung. Sie ist eng mit den Studienrichtungen Bioinformatik und Geoinformatik verwandt. Die Studienrichtung wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der Fakultät für Forstwissenschaften und Waldökologie angeboten. Spezielle Veranstaltungen im Bereich Angewandte Informatik werden vor allem am Institut für Forstliche Biometrie und Informatik angeboten. |

| Die Studienrichtung Wirtschaftsinformatik wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der Wirtschaftswissenschaflichen Fakultät angeboten. Hinweis: Im Bachelor-Master-Studium der Angewandten Informatik mit dem Studienschwerpunkt Wirtschaftsinformatik ist der Informatik-Anteil etwas stärker gewichtet als der wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Anteil. An Studierende, die eine stärkere Gewichtung der Wirtschaftswissenschaften bevorzugen, richtet sich ein eigenständiger Studiengang des Instituts für Wirtschaftsinformatik. |
