Representative of Scholars and Students with Special Needs :
Both the University and the Medical School have each assigned a representative for employees with special needs who serves as contact person for people who may require special workplace provisions.
Services at the Studentenwerk (student union):
The social services ('Sozialdienst') of the Studentenwerk counsels and helps students with disabilities or chronic illnesses. In particular, students have the possibility to nominate a person of their own choice as 'Studienhelfer', who will assist them as far as study matters are concerned (e.g. taking notes in classes, processing and reading out texts). As a general rule, the social service department at the City of Göttingen ('Sozialamt') covers the expenses. In addition, the Studentenwerk provides a of flats designed to meet the special needs of handicapped students.
Special Computer work places at the University Library:
The University's library ('SUB') provides two specially equipped computer work places which enable blind or visually disabled persons to compose texts on a PC, use the internet and all the services of the library.
A member of the library’s staff, usually a student in the framework of a community service programme (Zivildienstleistender), can provide an orientation and explanation of the system according to the user’s special needs.
Reading service at the Language Center:
The language center (Sprachlehrzentrum) offers a reading service to blind and visually disabled persons. Many texts from different scientific areas are already available on audio cassette.
Barrier- free buildings:
Many of the new buildings on the central campus and on the north campus are barrier-free and wheelchair-accessible. However, some of the old buildings in downtown locations are accessible only by stairs. Details will be provided by the contact persons named on the right side.
