Interaction between top quark and Higgs boson observed for the first time

Experimental physicists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva discovered in 2012 the Higgs boson that gives mass to the other particles. Since then, they are busy to unravelling how this interaction exactly happens. For the first time they now directly observed the production of the heaviest of all elementary particles, the top quark, simultaneously with the Higgs boson. A group from the University of Göttingen played an important role in the analysis. more…

Restoration of endangered carbon reservoirs

Tropical peat swamp forests are among the most important terrestrial carbon reservoirs, but they are increasingly being cleared. Data on their regenerative capacity have so far been completely lacking but are indispensable for conservation and restoration projects. Researchers from the University of Göttingen have now determined for the first time by means of palaeoecological investigations how long it takes for a tropical peat forest to recover after a disturbance. more…


Evolvability through modularity – an ancient design principle

Molluscs, such as snails, mussles, oysters and squid, are a group of animals that have enjoyed incredible evolutionary success for more than 540 million years. An international team of researchers from the University of Göttingen, the University of Bourgogne and the Museum of Natural History in Paris has now proposed that one of the reasons for this evolvability lies in the modularity of the tissue that forms the molluscan shell. more…
