The Accommodation Service helps Erasmus students and exchange students from partner universities to find accommodation, especially those who come to Göttingen for the first time. We allocate a limited number of student rooms. Depending on availability, there are the following accommodation options for exchange students:
Halls of Residence of the Studentenwerk (Student Services)
All rooms of the Studentenwerk which are offered to exchange students are furnished single rooms. This means you have you own room and share the kitchen and the bathroom with other students.
On the website of the Studentenwerk you can see which halls of residence provide rooms for exchange students.
Private Halls of Residence
There are some halls of residence which are run privately. They offer furnished single rooms. Usually, facilities like kitchen and bathroom are shared with other students. However, now and then there are also some single rooms with private bathroom available.
Accommodation offers from the private housing market
The Accommodation Service also receives and searches for offers from the private housing market; for example apartments for sub-rent or rooms for short-term lets in flat-shares. We always pay attention that the room offers for exchange students are for furnished accommodation. This means that the rooms which are offered by the Accommodation Service are furnished to a basic standard.
In flat-shares you would have your own room and share the kitchen and the bathroom with flat-mates. The number of people living together in a flat-share can vary. There are flat-shares of only 2 flat-mates but there are also houses in which there are 8 to 10 people living together.
The rent usually depends on the location of the flat, the number of flat-mates and the size of the room/apartment.

To give you a rough idea about rents in Göttingen: The rooms in the student dormitories cost about 170 - 270 euro per month, while a room on the private housing market would be more expensive and costs about 250 - 400 euro per month. Studios/apartments will be even more expensive and probably cost between 400 and 500 euro per month.

Private search for accommodation
If you would like to search for accommodation yourself, please consider that most rooms for rent are offered unfurnished in Germany. Therefore, please always double check if furniture is included in the rent. Please don't underestimate the difficulties in finding an accommodation!
