Odd behaviour of a star
An international team of astronomers led by the University of Göttingen has discovered the first inactive black hole in the heart of a giant star cluster. In addition, the observation marks the first time that a black hole has been found by directly detecting its gravitational pull.
The universe up close
An international team of astronomers with the involvement of the University of Göttingen has conducted the deepest spectroscopic survey ever. Using the MUSE instrument on European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope the scientists succeeded to measure distances and properties of 1600 very faint galaxies including 72 galaxies that had never been detected before.
Innovative doctoral programmes planned with Georgian universities
Göttingen University has raised funds totalling almost € 1.8 million for two joint doctoral programmes planned with universities in Georgia. From these grants, Göttingen University will be establishing a multidisciplinary doctoral programme with the Ilia State University Tbilisi (ISU) and a mathematical doctoral programme with the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) in the coming years.

Search for planets with Carmenes successful
Since 2016, German and Spanish researchers, among them scientists from the University of Göttingen, have been hunting for exoplanets with the “Carmenes” spectrograph. They now discovered their first star with an exoplanet: The planet is called HD 147379b and is slightly more massive than Neptune.
