Structure of the Master's programme
Altogether 120 credits (abbreviated C) have to be successfully completed during four semesters, so ca. 30 C per semester.
The 120 C divide as follows:
- 60 C from lectures, seminars and practical courses of mathematics
- 30 C minor subject and key competencies
- 30 C Master's thesis
One of the four fields of study that you can see in the right column is chosen. In this field of study, the Master's thesis is written. The courses of the Master's programme are organised in a special cycle structure. A lecture cycle normally consists at least of
- Introduction to the cycle ... (is being taught in the winter semester)
- Advances in the cycle ... (is being taught in the ensuing summer semester)
- Specialisation of the cycle ... (etc.)
and covers a mathematical topic very intensively. The possible cycles and their assignment to the fields of study can be found in the right column.
The cycles usually start in the winter semester, occasionally they can start in the summer semester. Not every cycle is offered in each year. A cycle lecture usually consists of two lecture sessions and one excercise session per week, and earns 9 credit points. Additionally to the cycles there are lectures and seminars for less credit points (usually 3) in other topics.

In Göttingen students choose between three study tracks (on the right) during the Master's programme in mathematics: general, mathematical data science and physics. Furthermore, mathematics in Göttingen is combined with a minor subject. Please note that we plan not to offer the track "Economathematics" from wintersemester 2022/23 on.
