Multiple Modernities

The projects contained within this research focus all see themselves as sharing a critical reflection on concepts of modernisation. The common basis of these projects is the attempt to grapple with the scholarly challenges of postmodern and postcolonial perspectives. Also pertinent to this debate is the concept of ‘multiple modernities’ (Eisenstadt), which emphasises interaction and simultaneity of local and distinct manifestations of political, technological, social, artistic and religious practices and regulations. This section should open up new research perspectives for the analysis of literary and historical constructions and cultural practices beyond linear concepts of modernisation.
