Rosalind Thornton & Stephen Crain - Acquisition of Negation and Related Phenomena

We introduce aspects of children's knowledge of negation and related phenomena, drawing, for the most part, on experiments that we have conducted in English and Mandarin Chinese. We will cover English-speaking children's production of sentential negation in 2- 3-year-old typically developing children as well as children with SLI; children's comprehension of double negation and negative concord, acquisition of NPIs, and cross-linguistic experiments on the interpretation of disjunction under negation. As we cover these topics, the 'nuts and bolts' of the experimental techniques of elicited production and the Truth Value Judgement Task will be introduced (see Crain & Thornton 1998) with the goal that students can use these tasks in their own experiments.
