The 2015 Handelsblatt ranking: Prof. Strulik ranks 2nd place among top research economists in German-speaking countries

Prof. Holger Strulik, Chair of Macroeonomics and Development in the Department of Economics, ranks as one of the top research economists in German-speaking countries. He places second behind a Zurich-based economist, Prof. Peter Egger. Other highly-ranked faculty members include Prof. Helmut Herwatz (Chair of Econometrics) ranking 28th, Assistant Prof. Thushyanthan Baskaran (Junior Professorship of Public Finance, in Göttingen until summer semester 2015) ranking 49th place, and Prof. Stephan Klasen (Chair of Development Economics) ranking 63rd place.

Assistant Prof. Baskaran is also included in the list of top 100 young researchers in German-speaking countries, ranking 23rd; and Prof. Thomas Kneib (Chair of Statistics) ranking 17th. In the ranking of "Lebenswerk" (life's work), Prof. Herwartz ranked 87th and Prof. Klasen ranked 104th. Detailed information about the rankings can be found here [in German].

Every two years, the KOF Swiss Economic Institute, a leading think tank, is contracted by the "Handelsblatt" to produce the list of top research economists. Publications of around 3600 researchers conducting research in German-speaking countries or those who are from the region but who are working abroad are analyzed and considered. The KOF Swiss Economic Institute considers more than 1500 international academic journals, including publications listed in the Econlit data base of the American Economic Association. There are also important statistical journals and interdisciplinary journals such as "Nature" and "Science". The qualities of the journals are also evaluated. The journals are weighted differently depending on the reputation of the journal, and points are distributed and then later summed. Detailed information on the methodology of the rankings can be found here [in German].

Faculties of economics are also ranked by their research strength based on the publications of individual researchers. In 2015, Göttingen placed number nine, moving up in the ranks by three places since 2013.
