Physics (Promotion/Ph.D.)

Features

The accredited doctoral programme in physics and various interdisciplinary doctoral programmes with physics participation cover a very broad spectrum of physics topics. They enable decisive, modern cutting-edge research at an excellent scientific level. The Faculty of Physics is a member of the Georg-August-University School of Science (GAUSS), under whose umbrella the education of doctoral students in the natural sciences at Göttingen University is bundled. Within the framework of GAUSS, there are various opportunities to do a doctorate in physics.

Details

The Faculty of Physics offers excellent doctoral opportunities. The doctoral students are integrated into Göttingen's international research environment. The spectrum of possible doctoral topics is very extensive and with a close connection to other disciplines, such as mathematical physics or biophysics. Within the framework of GAUSS, there are various opportunities to do a doctorate in physics.

  • The Doctoral Programme of the Faculty of Physics (Astrophysics, Biophysics, Didactics of Physics, Dynamics of Complex Systems, Solid State Physics, Geophysics, Materials Physics, X-ray Physics, Particle Physics, Theoretical Physics, Low Temperature Physics, etc.).
  • GGNB , the Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences

Under the guidance of a supervisory team consisting of three members, usually two of whom are experienced professors, the doctoral researchers can devote themselves in depth to their research question. During the entire programme, the doctoral researchers are enrolled as students of the University of Göttingen. The doctoral students attend lectures and seminars to deepen their knowledge and acquire new skills. Research results are also presented at international conferences and workshops. The doctoral programme ends with the submission of the doctoral thesis and the oral defence (disputation).

Structure

This programme offers the possibility to tailor the selection of courses, seminars, workshops and other activities to the specific needs of each doctoral student. Furthermore, doctoral students have access to a wide range of additional opportunities offered by all participating institutions and campus partners to further develop scientific skills and continue their education beyond the doctoral project. Up to and including preparation for the next career steps within and outside academia, doctoral students are supported.

Performance requirements

During the doctoral studies, students acquire 30 credit points (abbreviated C) before defending their dissertation. The credit points are acquired through the successful completion of the following modules:

  • P. Phy. 01: Thesis Advisory Committee Meeting (4 C, 2 SWS)
  • P. Phy. 02: Scientific presentation and communication (4 C)
  • P. Phy. 03: Scientific Writing (4 C)
  • P. Phy. 04: Advanced scientific qualification in theory and practice (3 C, 2 SWS)
  • P. Phy. 05: Additional scientific qualification in theory and practice (3 C, 2 SWS)
  • P. Phy. 06: Tutorial Teaching (8 C, 8 SWS)
  • P. Phy. 07: Key competences (4 C, 4 SWS)

The doctoral studies are completed with the submission of the doctoral thesis written by the student (dissertation) and the oral defence (disputation).
