Day 1 (Saturday, July 28)

Participants arrive in Whitehorse.

6.00 pm:  Orientation meeting. 

8.00 pm: Dinner (not included), stay overnight in Whitehorse.

 

Day 2 (Sunday, July 29)

  8.00 am: Pick up rental vehicles.

  9.00 am: Drive to Kluane Lake Research Station (KLRS).

12.00 pm: Lunch (included).

  1.00 pm: Paper presentations at KLRS.

  6.00 pm: Dinner (included), stay overnight at KLRS.

 

Day 3 (Monday, July 30)

  8.00 am: Breakfast (included),  paper presentations at KLRS.

12.30 pm: Lunch (included).

  1.30 pm: Local field trip at Kluane: 

  • Modern and Holocene loess production; recent glacial-drainage changes; soil patterns in a boreal grassland-forest mosaic

  6:00 pm: Dinner (included) 

  8.00 pm:  Return to Whitehorse.


Day 4 (TUEsday, July 31)

8.00 am: Drive to Dawson City (~ 550 km), with 3  stops:

  • Rough chronosequence of soils on progressively older glacial surfaces (Wisconsinan, penultimate glaciation, early Pleistocene), influence of tephra, aeolian deposition, periglacial processes.

Field lunch, water and snacks included.

8.00 pm: Dinner (not included), stay overnight in Dawson.

 

Day 5 (Wednesday, Aug 1)

8.00 am: Round trip ~ 200 km.

  • Visit sites in the adjacent Klondike Goldfields: unglaciated uplands with soils formed in weathered bedrock and colluvium, and early Pleistocene glacial outwash.

Lunch boxes, water and snacks included.  Depending on the state of placer mining activity, there may be an opportunity to see new exposures of Pliocene sediments which may contain evidence of pedogenesis.

8.00 pm: Dinner (not included), stay overnight in Dawson.


Day 6 (Thursday, Aug 2)

8.00 am: Drive on the “Top of the World Highway” (round trip ~ 200 km) between Dawson and U.S. border.

Most of the route is above treeline, and provides great views of unglaciated landscapes similar to much of interior Alaska and eastern Siberia, with cryoplanation terraces, solifluction lobes, and strong control of soil formation and permafrost distribution by slope aspect. Lunch boxes, water and snacks included.

8.00 pm: Dinner (not included), stay overnight in Dawson.

 

Day 7 (Friday, Aug 3)

  8.00 am-10.00 am: Workshop discussion and conclusion meeting.

10.00 am: free time in Dawson (museum, shopping, gold rush tourist sites), lunch (not included).

  1.00 pm: return to Whitehorse.

  8.00 pm: Dinner (not included), stay overnight in Whitehorse.

Air departures for participants.
