Dr. Renate Hartwig is new Assistant Professor for Development Economics

New assistant professor for development economics is Dr. Renate Hartwig. She will strengthen the Department of Economics of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen as of August 1, 2019. The junior professorship ("Juniorprofessur") was established together with the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies (Leibniz Institute for Global and Regional Studies) in Hamburg.

Prof. Hartwig's research focuses on the health sector. It deals with questions of financial security and access to health care and health products. Her work has been published in leading journals, including the Journal of Development Economics and Economic Development & Cultural Change. At the Faculty of Business and Economics, she will mainly offer courses in the Economics Bachelor's and Master's programmes, including an introduction to health economics and a course on social security systems in a developing country context.

Renate Hartwig studied economics with a focus on development economics and demography at the Universities of London (UK), Rotterdam (Netherlands), and Lund (Sweden). In 2014 she received her doctorate at the Erasmus University Rotterdam with a thesis on formal and informal safeguards and their effects ("Essays on the effects of informal and formal protection arrangements") at the Chair of Development Economics of Prof. Michael Grimm. During her doctoral studies, she spent research stays at the Paris School of Economics and the Australian National University in Canberra.

Before moving to Göttingen, Renate Hartwig worked as a "Chargé de Recherche" (similar to a junior professorship) at the University of Namur in Belgium and in 2019 for a research stay at Northwestern University in the United States.
