Working Group e-learning

Aims of the e-learning approach
Development and testing of e-learning material and of e-learning concepts particularly with regard to the training in GIS. The approach is aiming at a type of blended learning improving the quality of teaching and student supervision. Blended learning combines self-study of online materials and supervision of on-site tutorials.

  • Accomplishment of blended learning scenarios as a enrichment of classroom teaching
  • Development and testing of new e-learning scenarios (e.g. online meetings or web conferences)
  • Improvement of self-determined learning (e.g. e-learning independent of location and time)
  • Establishment of a sustainable knowledge base with respect to e-learning approaches

Web Based Trainings (WBTs)
Participants of the course „Raumbezogene Informationssysteme“ can benefit from the following three e-learning modules for the training of theoretical and practical work with GIS:

An extensive e-learning module for ArcGIS (ESRI) which is upgraded continously. Moreover, basic e-learning modules for the Open Source GIS QGIS and gvSIG are provided.

These WBT´s are integrated in the course „Raumbezogene Informationssysteme“ which is part of the bachelor study programme. As an optional course within the master programme the e-learning module „Introduction to GroIMP“ is provided.

Testing of online tutorials

This is a pilot project aiming at an enrichment of the existing asynchronous teaching offer in the field of GIS.

Synchronous location-independent online tutorials will be provided and evaluated. It shall be assessed to what extent these additional learning offers are occupied by the students.

Point of departure
Point of departure for the e-learning approach in the department as well as in the faculty was the so-called ELAN project which was funded by the state of lower saxony. to the ELAN portal (no longer current)...

Note: Synchronous e-learning is similar to the traditional face-to-face course. By building learning communities through the use of media, such as chat rooms and videoconferencing, synchronous e-learning supports real-time relationship building. In this type of learning environment, students interact with each other and faculty in online classrooms equipped with compressed video, electronic whiteboards, and the Internet. Asynchronous e-learning occurs when a student is seated at a computer and streams media over the Internet. Typical forms of media the student streams are email messages and discussion board posts (http://www.suite101.com).
