Title: Biophysics of neuronal information encoding - from molecules and networks

Abstract:
Nerve cells in the brain represent information in a quasi-digital manner by means of brief electrical transients. The dynamics of their generation does limit the encoding of information, comparable to low-pass filtering. We found that nerve cells utilize different physical principles to tune their bandwidth of encoding. This has a profound impact on the performance of neuronal networks and might represent a novel principle of their modulation.
