Programme description
Building upon the BA, students will acquire in-depth knowledge of the Late Classical Period and Byzantine world, especially in regard to their material and artistic legacy. They will examine the content, genre geography and epoch of subject-related topics. Students will become confident in assessing even complex material, artistic and iconographic characteristics and in socially interpreting findings. Students will apply differentiated methods of questioning, interpreting and presenting cultural evidence (source study, exploration techniques incl. excavations, documentation, works analysis, iconography, style critique, dealing with non-artistic objects, conservation, scientific writing, media didactics). Students will be able to recognize the gaps in the information that is currently available and to specifically tackle them in an original manner. They will be well prepared to explore special literature and to critically assess the available opinions of researchers. They will be able to adequately present their findings and results to an expert audience as well as a general audience.

Programme structure
The programme comprises 120 ECTS points (credits) that are earned as follows: a) 78 credits in the subject-specific area: 42 credits in Archaeology and Art History of the Late Antique and Byzantine World (M.A.) in combination with another permissible module packet worth 36 credits or with two permissible module packets from other subjects worth 18 credits each; b) 12 credits in the area of professionalisation; c) 30 credits with the Master's thesis. The subject can alternatively be studied as a subject-external module packet worth 36 or 18 credits.

Research foci
Thanks to the special orientation of the current subject representative, the concentration on Hispania in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages is one of Göttingen's strengths. The programme does, however, aim to convey content from all regions and epochs of the subject area.

Occupational fields
The qualification profile of the graduates gives them immediate access to occupational fields such as museums, preservation of historical monuments, youth and adult education, culture and educational management, publishing houses, press, new media, diplomatic institutions, international organisations etc. The programme also gives graduates the requirements they need to further qualify themselves in the field of archaeological research and teaching within the framework of doctoral studies.
