Extended competence assessment systems in the health sector ("EKGe") - funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research / BMBF (project duration: 01.05.2019 to 30.04.2022)

Funded through: BMBF

Project duration: 01.05.2019 to 30.04.2022

Brief description:

The project "Extended Competence Measurement in the Health Sector (EKGe)" from the research and transfer initiative ASCOT+ uses computer-assisted assessment procedures to record the acquired professional skills acquired by trainees in the health sector in a differentiated and standardized manner. Vocational qualifications regarding patient care and support in the professional field of healthcare can be measured reliably and validly with the help of competency models and technology-based testing instruments developed within the first ASCOT initiative (projects TEMA and CoSMed). The EKGe project aims to expand these competency models and technology-based testing instruments by adding important competency facets and to then transfer these onto vocational training programmes. This extension consists of two competence areas: (1) the coping mechanism which focuses on dealing with professional and occupational field-specific stress in order to maintain one's own mental health, (2) competencies for the interprofessional cooperation.

On one hand, the integration of both competence areas into the existing instrument are analyzed regarding the understaffing in the health sector, which leads to substantial workloads as well as an increase in psychological stress and is also relevant for the professional life of nursing staff. On the other hand, a closely coordinated interprofessional cooperation and the ability to collaborate with other professional groups is becoming increasingly important, e.g. the multimorbidity of elderly patients and clients and the technological integration of work processes. Relevant competency requirements can be found in the curriculum of the generalized nursing training programmes.

In addition to an in-depth analysis of the conditions in practical nursing training, the measured professional action competencies are related to process data on the quality of training in a longitudinal section. The aim is to explain the development of measured competencies with the help of individual and organization-related training characteristics based on innovative, process-oriented survey instruments and to gain valid insights into the conditions for coping with typical tasks in nursing practice. Furthermore, the project develops and tests an intervention to support job-related coping mechanisms of prospective nursing professionals allowing the generation of reliable statements about a targeted improvement of these skills. The IT-supported, didactically prepared teaching learning module will be digitally available for broad use.
