    Studying geography in Göttingen

The varied and practically oriented, German-language Bachelor programme Geography of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen will lead to a qualification for jobs or a Master Study Programme within three years (6 semsters).

Geography – potential for many occupational areas

Employment opportunities for geographers are manifold, such as in the field of climate change, migration, demographic change, environmental protection, nature conservation, tourism, city and regional marketing, spatial planning, natural hazard management, city and location planning, etc. Qualified geographers are sought after dialogue partners and are often in positions with good career advancement possibilities.

    Geography - an interdisciplinary science

Geography constitutes a link between the humanities, natural and social sciences.
Geographers approach problems in a holistic way. At its core, the relationships between humans and the environment, technology and nature are analysed. The central parameter is space: how do humans form space, and how does space form humans? One of the geographers’ biggest strength is their interdisciplinary approach.

Geography is dominated by two branches:hysical geography and human geography

Physical geography questions and explains nature, for example: Why and with which consequences does climate change? How does a tsunami develop? Why does the drainage regime of rivers change? Why does the composition of soils change? What does this mean for the ecology of landscapes?

Human geography is focused on humans and society, for example: How does a gentrification of an urban district affect the people living there? What effect does the establishment of a new mall have on the economy, the general public and the environment? What effect do declining prices of imports in Europe have on the condition of production and living in the producer countries?
