Studying gene function diversity in non-traditional model organisms

GönomiX

We are a collaborating group of labs, residing at the Göttingen Campus, that are studying the diversity of gene function in development and other biological processes. We are using a broad range of non-traditional model systems including insects, annelids, flatworms, molluscs, cnidarians and starfish. Please find more information on our model systems here.

We are using and developing novel genetic techniques and we are transferring methods to our model systems. This opens the possibility of performing functional genetic work in non-traditional animals. Our group has experts for NGS sequencing, RNAi, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and transgenesis along with expertise in phylogenomics, and state of the art morphological and life imaging techniques. We are profiting from mutual exchange of expertise in technology and in ‘new-model organism biology’.
We are focusing on studying the diversity of gene function that can be observed in nature with respect to a number of processes. One strong focus is on anterior development of animals. Another topic is the genetic basis of processes that can be targeted for pest control.
Besides doing lab based research, we join forces to train PhD students in our program “Genes, Development and Evolution” (GGNB) and to share our knowledge with early stage scientists in the SPIRIT Summer School "Molecular genetics in Zoology”.
In our seminar series Genes, Development, and Evolution we invite distinguished speakers to present and discuss their work at Göttingen (supported by the GZMB). Please find the upcoming seminars at the Göttingen Campus Calendar.
