International Symposium:

"Extrapolitics: Indian Democracy and the 'Political Outside'"


The Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS) at the University of Göttingen held an international symposium entitled "Extrapolitics: Indian Democracy and the 'Political Outside'" in December 2012. Bringing together a multidisciplinary group of leading South Asianists from India, France, UK, USA, and Germany, the symposium investigated a topic of great relevance to academics, global policymakers, and concerned citizens alike: the growing importance of the "political outside," the proliferation of practices, and ideologies of politics outside the domain of formal electoral democracy.
