International Workshop:

"Politics, Spaces and Social Relations of Consumption"

In mid-July 2012, the History Research Group at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies organized an international Workshop on "Politics, spaces and social relations of consumption: urban India in the 20th century" at Göttingen University.

Discourses on consumption became an indispensable part of the cultural, political and social processes in South Asia through which the urban middle classes sought to define its distinctive identity. The workshop took a critical look at the intersection of social relations constituting and comprising the processes of consumption by the urban public in order to understand how patterns of consumption take shape together with urban development, and how urban culture in India is transformed.
