„The City of Knowledge“: Since it was founded in 1737, the University of Göttingen has been characterizing life in Göttingen. Today, the profile of the University is determined by a strong focus on research-based teaching, the diversity of courses offered and the high level of performance in research. Except for the engineering sciences, all disciplines are represented in Göttingen. With excellent scientists from around the world and a high proportion of foreign students, the University continues the tradition as an academic centre with an international reputation. In 2007, the University was also successful in the Excellence Initiative with its institutional strategy and is one of the best German universities in international rankings.
Göttingen is a classic university town. More than 24,000 students live and study here. They give the city its young face. Numerous street cafes, pubs and bars, discos and clubs, or the big student parties in the foyer of the main lecture hall building provide Göttingen with nightlife. In the orientation week for freshmen, the “colorful evening” and the “first semester party” held by the Faculty of Economic Sciences will entice you. The St. Nicholas Party in December has attained a cult status in the meantime.
Cinemas, sports and cultural associations as well as the beautiful surroundings offer attractive recreational opportunities. University Sports with more than 80 sports is one of the biggest sports provider in southern Lower Saxony. Students also benefit from the relatively low cost of living.
Göttingen is a city with short distances, where everything can easily be reached by foot or by bike. Economists study on the main campus in the middle of town – the old city and train station are only five minutes away. Whoever would like to leave Göttingen, however, is pleased about the direct ICE train connections to Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt/Main or Munich.
