Development of novel wood-based materials from chemically modified veneers, fibres and chips

By chemically modifying their wood components, wood-based materials such as plywood, chipboard and fibreboard could now be used outdoors and in wet rooms. Similar to solid wood, this modification should result in increased moisture resistance and dimensional stability. In addition, an increased durability against wood-destroying fungi and a longer life of the weathered wood-based material was achieved.
First, various modification methods were tested on veneers and then transferred to chips and fibres. Wood materials are then produced from the modified wood substrate. The binder and press parameters are varied and the material properties were investigated. In the last phase, the developed technology was transferred to technical scale and integrated into existing industrial processes.
