The Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Göttingen was one of the first universities in Germany to completely implement the change from the single-tier diploma programmes to two-tier Bachelor and Master programmes by the winter semester of 2005/2006. All programmes were accredited by the Central Evaluation Agency Hannover in May 2006 and January 2010 after an intensive evaluation. Additionally, the according degree programmes were re-accredited and the new Master's degree programme was accredited in April 2011. The first degree is the Bachelor as a professional qualifying degree.
With the start of the new Bachelor's programmes in the winter semester of 2005/2006 the enrolment to all diploma programmes was discontinued. The complete implementation of the accredited Bachelor and Master programmes not only made our faculty leaders in this development, but also enabled us to be creative and innovate in forming new programmes.

Why did the Faculty of Economics carry out the change from diploma programmes to Bachelor's and Master's programmes?
Germany, together with 28 other European nations, signed the so-called 'Declaration of Bologna' in June 1999. The signees set the aim of creating university convergence by the year 2010. The core element of this planned university convergence is the implementation of the tiered system of study comprising Bachelor and Master programmes.
The core contents of the 'Declaration of Bologna' are
Which system was implemented at the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Göttingen?
The faculty has implemented the '6 + 4 - system' : The standard period of study for Bachelor programmes is six semester; the standard period of study for Master programmes is four semesters.
The six-semester Bachelor programmes are divided into the orientation phase (1st and 2nd semester) and the in-depth and specialisation phase (3rd - 6th semester). The orientation phase is identical for all Bachelor programmes, meaning that all Bachelor programmes have the same first phase. (One exception is the Bachelor programme in Business Information Systems, where the module Law is replaced by the module Informatics, as well as the Bachelor's programme Business and Human Resource Education)
The four-semester Master's programmes are divided into the 'course phase' (1st-3rd semester) and the Master thesis (4th semester). The consecutive Master programmes have limited admission.
