  • The Political Economy of International Organizations (PEIO)
The 4th Annual Conference, January 27-29, 2011, Washington, DC

The PEIO conference will bring together economists, political scientists and other scholars to address political-economy issues related to any international organization, including the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, and the European Union, as well as other regional organizations and non-governmental organizations. Questions we seek to address include how IOs are organized and governed, what are the incentives of governments dealing with IOs as well as the incentives of the bureaucrats who staff them, and what are the effects of IOs on policy outcomes. We will also consider the interaction of IOs with transnational actors such as commercial lobbies and NGOs. Finally, we have a particular interest in the interaction of the international political economy with the domestic political economy of IOs members.
The conference aims to be international in character. Previous PEIO conferences have included contributions from scholars of various national origins, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Korea, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Portugal, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This year we hope to build on and expand this diversity.

The conference gratefully acknowledges funding from the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance, Princeton University and the KOF Swiss Economic Institute.

  • Strategies for Solving Global Crises. The Financial Crisis and Beyond
Workshop for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Researchers, October 16-17, 2009, Göttingen

  • The Political Economy of International Organizations (PEIO)
The 3rd Annual Conference, January 29-31, 2009, Genf, Schweiz

The 2nd international conference on the political economy of international organizations aims at bringing together economists and political scientists working on the political economy of international organizations, in particular the UN, the IMF, the World Bank, the WTO and the EU. It will deal with questions of the institutional structure of these organizations, their impact on the incentives of the international bureaucracy, and the effects of these incentives on policy outcomes and administrative efficiency. Moreover, incentives of other political actors interacting with these institutions will be considered, in particular individual governments, commercial lobbies and NGOs. Related to this, there will be a discussion on the relationship between the policy of international organizations and the political economy within individual countries.

Finally, it will also be considered to what extent the expansion of the field of activities of some organizations or the introduction of new international organizations challenges other already existing ones, which new incentives arise out of this situation and how individual organizations react to this challenge.
