The appointment and hiring requirements for junior professors are governed by Section 30 of the Higher Education Act of Lower Saxony (NHG):
• In the case of candidates who were employed as research associates, fellows or student assistants before, during or after their doctoral thesis, the total period of doctoral studies and employment must not have been longer than six years.


Whereas,
• Scholarships will not be included in the computation if you were not employed for the duration of the scholarship.

If the total combined period of doctoral studies and employment was longer than six years, the applicable times may be shortened, particularly if the following reasons can be accounted for and proven by the appropriate documents:
o Periods of parental leave (max. 2 years per child)
o Periods devoted to childcare or in-home nursing care
o Personal illnesses
