The eleven doctoral programs of GGNB span a broad range of experimental approaches dictated by the rapid developments in all of the fields covered by the graduate school. Integrated training concepts are needed that challenge traditional research infrastructures and institutional or departemental divisions.
The main objective of GGNB is to offer a joint research-based training program that prepares doctoral students for a career in academia or industry. To achieve this goal, the curricular design of GGNB is built upon the following principles:
- Reflection of scientific strengths: Extended methods courses, selected lecture series and workshops, reflecting the particular strengths of the Göttingen research landscape, are offered to all GGNB students in high-standard facilities in a joint effort of both university and non-university institutions. New laboratory facilities will be established for advanced training in selected fields.
- Freedom of choice: A wide range of courses, lectures, seminars, scientific meetings, and other activities is offered by GGNB. In addition, GGNB students are encouraged to participate in international meetings, and to acquire know-how for their own research in courses at other research institutions.
- Independence and responsibility: The doctoral candidates on their own organize scientific meetings, professional skills courses, and retreats. For these activities, they are granted a budget that they administer independently. Furthermore, senior GGNB students will be involved in the supervision of lab rotations and Master’s thesis projects, and/or in the organization of short methods courses.
- Individual counselling: The thesis committee advises the doctoral candidates in the selection of appropriate meetings, courses, projects, or other curricular activities.
- Team spirit and networking: The broad range of courses and activities contributes to the creation of a highly interactive student community. In particular, the student-organized activities have proven to be instrumental for fostering team spirit.
