Summer School: Ancient Histories and Narratives in Chr. W. Gluck’s Operas

The Musicology Department of JGU Mainz will be conducting a Summer School from September 10–15, 2018, in collaboration with the Christoph Willibald Gluck complete edition, the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and the Institute of Ancient and Classical Studies Mainz as part of the BMBF-funded LOB-project. The course will be led by Jun.-Prof. Dr. habil. Stefanie Acquavella-Rauch and will deal with the reception of ancient histories and narratives in Christoph Willibald Gluck's operas. In addition to introductions to the ancient themes, to librettology and to stagecraft of the 18th century, this will involve a close study of selected compositions in the form of opera portraits.The program will include an excursion to the Schlosstheater in Schwetzingen.

The course is designed for advanced students of musicology, classical and ancient studies in Germany and abroad, offering them an international study program in Mainz. The course will be held in German and English; there is no course fee and financial support for accommodations is available. Furthermore, ECTS credits can be obtained.
