A key measure of the excellence initiative at the University of Göttingen is the implementation and the support of junior research groups in interdisciplinary research centres, the so-called Courant Research Centres (named after the director of the Mathematical Institute 1920-1933, Richard Courant).

The Courant Research Centre Evolution of Social Behaviour was founded summer 2008. The centre comprises scientists from the Biological Faculty of the University of Göttingen and the German Primate Centre. Three Junior Research Groups were implemented in order to do research on the evolutionary basis of human social behaviour.
