Communication – Leadership – Career Development

An in-house training series for junior professionals
Working as a junior research group leader nowadays requires much more than excellent scientific skills. Students need to be taught, group members need to be advised, money needs to be acquired and managed, conflicts need to be resolved, articles and books need to be written. Scientific excellence is a prerequisite to many of these challenges but is not enough to master it all. The University of Göttingen therefore offers an in-house training series for all junior research group leaders and junior professors at the Göttingen Research Campus. The workshops are tailored to the needs of the target group and cover a variety of topics such as communication, leadership, and career development skills.

Goals of the program
The program is meant to strengthen the participants’ non-scientific skills in order to help them meet the various challenges that confront leaders in management level positions. Improved confidence in mastering these new roles will result in more time to concentrate on research objectives.

Child care
Together with the university’s family service centre, child care can be provided where needed. Participants are requested to provide six weeks’ notice prior to the respective workshop.

Coaching
Individual coaching can be provided to all participants in the workshop "The Art of Leadership”. The coaching is meant to support the participants in their leadership role and strengthen self-confidence as a group leader. The university’s Equal Opportunities Office has assembled a pool of coaches who are familiar with the work in an academic environment. They can be contacted via the coordinator of the program. The university will cover 50% of the costs up to a maximum of 1.000 € per person.
