In memory of Stephan Klasen

We are deeply saddened by the news that our colleague and friend, Professor Stephan Klasen, passed away. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and colleagues in these difficult times.

Stephan Klasen co-founded and directed the Center of Poverty, Equity, and Growth at the Georg-August-Universität. During his prolific academic career, he contributed to the consolidation of the area of Development Economics in Germany and Europe. His work on poverty, gender inequality, food security, and environmental economics showed paths to effective policies to improve deprived populations' living conditions worldwide.

Stephan was actively involved in various multidisciplinary initiatives that shared the common goal of making this a better world. He was a member of the UN Committee on Development Policy, President of the European Research Network, coordinator and lead author in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He was an inspirational and exemplar leader.

Professor Stephan Klasen profoundly impacted many young scholars who benefited from the collaboration and illuminating suggestions and comments. The "Göttingen Schule" found in him an "inspiring teacher" who transformed their lives and who supported them unconditionally throughout their careers.

The Development Economics Professorships of the Faculty, together with the Executive Board of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and the Faculty of Business and Economics, launched the Stephan Klasen Fellowship. We invite post-doctoral researchers from developing countries to apply.
