Call for applications: PhD
This call for applications is now closed.
12 PhD positions (f/m/d)
with 65 % of the regular weekly working hours (currently 25.87 hours/week) for a limited period of 3 years starting in 1st September 2021. Remuneration is according to the German public salary scale TV-L 13.
Your tasks
Each graduate student will work on a research project that fits in within the overall theme of the RTG. Applicants can choose a research topic of their own, as long as the proposal fits the RTG’s guiding idea or select one of the suggested projects. Every applicant has two members of the RTG as their main supervisors. In addition, there is a thesis committee that oversees the overall progress.
Your profile
Applicants are expected to have a completed academic degree in one or more of the following fields or in a related subject: linguistics, general linguistics, (modern/historical) languages/philology, computational linguistics/computer science, cognitive science, psychology/psycholinguistics, or philosophy. They are expected to hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent). In addition, advanced command of the English language is required. German language skills are not required but encouraged. Candidates who have not finished their MA program by the date of the submission should deliver a declaration by their supervisor(s) that the degree will be obtained prior to the start of the RTG positions.
The Research Training Group 2636
The RTG 2636 funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) offers a structured 3-year doctoral program for students of linguistics and/or related fields working on the overarching question as to how morphosyntactic structures are mapped onto meaning. The RTG covers all core areas of linguistics: grammatical theory (morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics), linguistic variation including sign languages, language change, language processing and language acquisition. Facilities are available for a wide-range of research methods including corpus studies, experimentation (for instance, eye tracking), linguistic fieldwork and computational modeling. Furthermore, the RTG does not explicitly restrict the grammatical framework assumed for each research project. Thus, candidates working in not only generative frameworks but also Categorial grammar, constraint-based grammar (HPSG/LFG), functional grammar, among others, are encouraged to apply.
The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in fields in which they are underrepresented. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports their employees in balancing work and family life. The mission of the University is to employ a greater number of severely disabled persons. Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be given preference.
Application process
Applicants should send, in a single pdf file named “PhDposition + family name of applicant”, an application containing:
(a) A letter of motivation, in which they elaborate their ambitions, scientific interests and how they consider fitting in the RTG’s overall research goals and the scientific community in Göttingen in general. In this letter, the applicants should also indicate whether they intend to explore one of the suggested projects or whether they intend to carry out a project based on a proposal of their own (within the scientific range of the RTG).
(b) An academic CV
(c) Scans of the documents indicating academic degrees (or the supervisor declaration)
(d) A copy of the Master’s thesis (or a representative chapter of the thesis or a paper)
(e) The contact details of two academic referees
This single pdf-file should be uploaded by 17.02.2021 to the following address: https://lotus2.gwdg.de/uni/uzdv/perso/knr_100808.nsf.
