Project: Stock, turnover and functions of carbon in heavily weathered soils under lowland rainforest transformation systems

This project is part of the Collaborative Research Center 990 Ecological and socioeconomic functions of tropical lowland rainforest
transformation systems (Sumatra, Indonesia) founded by the DFG.


  • Assessment of changes in stock, budget and quality of C in heavily weathered soils after conversion of lowland rainforest to the three transformation systems (Jungle rubber, Rubber plantations, Oil palm plantations)
  • Evaluation of mechanisms of C sequestration with special focus on DOM fluxes within whole soil profile by four land use systems and evaluation of changed turnover of SOM and microbial biomass
  • Assessment of changes of functions of stored C by evaluation of microbial activities
