The workshop will provide an opportunity for an initial exchange with representatives from Tanzania about the presence of remains from Tanzania in Göttingen, which is a first for the German research context. Together with museum staff, scholars and stakeholders from Tanzania, scholars from the global South and representatives of other societies of origin, the workshop will discuss possibilities and ways of returning Tanzanian remains and place them within the broader horizon of current discourses and practices of restitution of remains from colonial collections in Europe. Such a direct exchange on this topic is an important step in the understanding between Germany and Tanzania and would immensely strengthen the cooperation between Germany and African partners and make it sustainable for the future.
