Accreditation in higher education means recognition of courses of studies (especially Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes) and universities for a limited period of time by an established procedure. Quality assurance according to international standards in teaching and studies is effected by verification and confirmation of compliance with certain minimum requirements. This enables the universities to cultivate a distinctive profile for themselves and their degree programmes. The accreditation procedure, consisting of subject-related evaluation of content in degree programmes, is carried out by accreditation agencies. In turn, these agencies are required to be accredited for a limited period of time themselves by the Accreditation Council, which authorises them to carry out accreditations.
