Details | After almost four months of intense protests across Iran after the killing of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini by the Iranian Police on September 17, there has been a vast mobilization of (new) political actors in and outside of Iran. Their political practices are crystalized in a specific form of street politics. Amini’s tragic death was the most recent case of a decades-long state-sanctioned and systemic sexism and misogynistic politics in Iran. It was a breaking point revealing how law enforcement not only does not protect women, ethnic, religious and sexual minorities, and dispossessed citizens, but rather exposes them to violence and death. A slogan that has grown to the main symbol of the current protests is Women, Life, Freedom! In this talk, Professor Shahram Khosravi will contextualize the protests within the broader struggle for justice in Iran. |
