"The city that creates knowledge": The Georgia Augusta has shaped life in Göttingen since its foundation in 1737. Today, the university's profile is determined by a strong emphasis on research-based teaching, the diversity of the courses offered and the high level of performance in research. Göttingen is a classic student city. Around 30,000 students (out of a total population of around 120,000) live and study here. They give the city its young face. Numerous street cafés, pubs and bars, discos and clubs or the large student parties in the foyer of the Central Lecture Hall Building provide Göttingen's nightlife. Right in the introductory week for first-semester students, the Bunte Abend (colourful evening) and the WiWi first-semester party attract students.

Cinemas, sports and cultural clubs as well as the beautiful surrounding countryside offer attractive leisure opportunities. The university's Hochschulsport is one of the largest sports providers in southern Lower Saxony.

City of short distances with a central location in Germany

Göttingen is also a city of short distances, where everything is within easy reach on foot or by bike. Business students study on the central campus in the middle of the city - the city centre and train station are only five minutes away. If you would like to leave the city, you can take advantage of direct ICE connections to Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt/Main or Munich, for example, which can be reached quickly in two to four hours.

With their semester ticket, all Göttingen students travel for free by bus in the extended city area and receive reduced admission to various cultural institutions such as clubs, museums, the city's theatres or even to the games of BG Göttingen, Göttingen's Bundesliga basketball team. In addition, the semester ticket is also a train ticket (local and regional transport) for most routes in Lower Saxony as well as for individual connections in the direction of Hesse, Thuringia and North Rhine-Westphalia.
