| Details | Since work of Castelnuovo, Enriques and Kodaira, it has become clear that rational curves play a prominent role in the classification of algebraic surfaces, and the scope of these ideas has since been vastly expanded by work of Mori and others. In this talk I will survey how understanding the existence and deformations of rational curves in varieties has come to be at the core of many fundamental questions in algebraic geometry today. |
