The 4e−/4H+ oxidation of water generating O2 is considered as the bottleneck in this reaction and usually requires a rather large over potential. We report on the synthesis and application of a binuclear cobalt(III) complex, 1, with two μ-OH ligands and tripodal triazole ligands, L, in the electrochemical water oxidation reaction (WOR; L=tris((1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)amine). The cobalt(III) centres in the complex exhibit an octahedral coordination geometry and the complex is stable in water. Electrochemical studies revealed that solutions of 1NO3 catalyse the WOR in phosphate or borate buffer. However, further analysis showed, that 1NO3 is a precursor and decomposes under the applied potential. A smooth deposit is formed on the electrode surface, which is a highly active water oxidation catalysis. Attempts to explain the dependence of measured frictional losses at nanoscale contacts on the electronic degrees of freedom of the surrounding materials have so far been controversial. Here, it is proposed that friction can be explained by considering the damping of stick-slip pulses in a sliding contact. Based on friction force microscopy studies of La(1−x)SrxMnO3 films at the ferromagnetic-metallic to a paramagnetic-polaronic conductor phase transition, it is confirmed that the sliding contact generates thermally-activated slip pulses in the nanoscale contact, and argued that these are damped by direct coupling into the phonon bath. Electron-phonon coupling leads to the formation of Jahn–Teller polarons and to a clear increase in friction in the high-temperature phase. There is neither evidence for direct electronic drag on the atomic force microscope tip nor any indication of contributions from electrostatic forces. The c-axis orientation in epitaxial films is tailored by different SrTiO3 (STO) substrate orientations and CaMnO3 (CMO) buffer layers. Films on STO(110) show in-plane alignment of the c-axis parallel to the [100] direction. On STO(100), two possible directions of the in-plane c-axis lead to a mosaic like, quasi 2D nanostructure, consisting of RP, rock-salt, and perovskite blocks. With the CMO buffer layer, Pr0.5Ca1.5MnO4 epitaxial films with c-axis out-of-plane are realized. Different physical vapor deposition techniques as ion beam sputtering, pulsed laser deposition and metalorganic aerosol deposition are applied in order to distinguish effects of growth conditions from intrinsic epitaxial properties. Despite their very different growth conditions, surface morphology, crystal structure, and orientation of the thin films reveal a high level of similarity as verified by X-ray diffraction, scanning, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. For different epitaxial relations stress in the films is relaxed by means of modified interface chemistry. In comparison to electrolyte solutions not containing phosphate{,} the investigated Ca-birnessite electrodes show especially high and stable oxygen evolution activity in phosphate buffer. During electrolysis{,} partial ion substitutions of Ca2+ by K+ and OH−/O2− by HnPO4(3−n)− were observed{,} leading to the formation of a stable{,} partially disordered Ca–K–Mn–HnPO4–H2O layer on the outer and the pore surfaces of the active electrocatalyst material. In this surface layer{,} Mn3+ ions are stabilized{,} which are often assumed to be of key importance for oxygen evolution catalysis. Furthermore{,} evidence for the formation of [Ca/PO4/H2O]− complexes located between the [MnO6] layers of the birnessite was found using the soft Ca 2p and Ca L-edge X-ray spectroscopy. The pyrene group unit is introduced at the end of the ligand synthesis via a coupling reaction{,} which allows for a versatile ligand modification in order to tune the electronic properties or to introduce various anchor groups for heterogenisation at a late stage. The redox chemistry of the pyrene-α-diimine-Re(CO)3 complex{,} 1{,} was investigated in N{,}N-dimethylformamide (dmf){,} including IR-spectroelectrochemical (IR-SEC) characterisation of the short lived{,} reduced species. Subsequently{,} the electrochemical H+/CO2-reduction catalysis in dmf/water was investigated. The complex catalyses syngas formation yielding CO and H2 with similar rates{,} namely in Faraday yields of 45% and 35%{,} respectively. Since the similar complex without the pyrene anchor in the backbone{,} I{,} prefers CO2 over H+ reduction{,} the formation of syngas was rationalised by the small differences in the redox properties and pKa values of the phenol-pyrene unit in regard to phenol unit as in I. Subsequently{,} the complex was adsorbed on multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on a GC electrode surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed coating of the electrode. The immobilised complex was utilised in the electrochemical CO2/H+ reduction in dmf/water{,} however{,} the complex quickly desorbed under reductive conditions{,} likely due to the good solubility of the reduced species. However, a complete understanding of the structure of the most active variants is still lacking. Nanocrystalline MoS2+δ was prepared by a solvothermal method and immobilized on graphene. The obtained electrodes exhibit stable HER current densities of 3 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of ~200 mV for at least 7 h. A structural analysis of the material by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) show partially disordered nanocrystals of a size between 5–10 nm. Both X-ray and electron diffraction reveal large fluctuations in lattice spacing, where the average c-axis stacking is increased and the in-plane lattice parameter is locally reduced in comparison to the layered structure of crystalline MoS2. A three-dimensional structural model of MoS2+δ could be derived from the experiments, in which [Mo2S12]2− and [Mo3S13]2− clusters as well as disclinations represent the typical defects in the ideal MoS2 structure. This scheme allows the simultaneous measurement of an integrated total fluorescence yield and the partial fluorescence yields (PFY) of the Mn 3{\it s}{--}2{\it p} and Mn 3{\it d}{--}2{\it p} transitions when scanning the Mn {\it L}-edge. In addition to this, the reduction in O fluorescence provides another measure for absorption often referred to as the inverse partial fluorescence yield (IPFY). Among these different methods to measure XA, the Mn 3{\it s} PFY and IPFY deviate the least from the true XA spectra due to the negligible influence of selection rules on the decay channel. This is hindered by the large overpotentials of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, where peroxide is an undesired side product. We study the suitability of epitaxial (001)-oriented La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 perovskite surfaces as a bifunctional catalyst using a rotating-ring disk electrode (RRDE) assembly and focus particularly on the selectivity of the ORR. The peroxide yield is above 50 \% during ORR-only investigations in the scan range of 0.69 to 0.99 V vs. RHE where the CV traces are reproducible. In contrast, the peroxide yield is drastically reduced during OER-ORR cycling where a peroxide yield below 10 \% is reached during the ORR in the scan range of 0.74 V to 1.74 V vs. RHE.
