Press release: Transformation of higher education

No. 230 - 06.11.2019

University of Göttingen launches new network with eight other universities from all over Europe

The University of Göttingen and eight other universities from all over Europe have formally launched a new network of higher education called “Enlight”. In a letter of intent, the nine partners expressed their commitment to prepare a joint application for the second call of the European Universities Initiative. Among other things, the network wants to promote sustainability and global engagement through higher education transformation. Besides the University of Göttingen, its members include the Universities of Ghent, Tartu, Basque Country, Bordeaux, Galway, Groningen, Uppsala and Comenius Bratislava.

“Together with our old and new partners, we aim to change the European higher education area,” says Göttingen University’s Acting President Dr Valérie Schüller. “We are also pursuing the goal of training students throughout Europe to become globally committed citizens who can meet the great challenges society is facing.”

“By promoting student mobility and expanding a joint international curriculum dedicated to the future challenges Europe’s cities and communities are facing, in particular in terms of urbanisation, our network will also contribute to improving the quality of life and sustainability in the regions around the universities,” adds Professor Hiltraud Casper-Hehne, Vice-President for International Affairs at the University of Göttingen.

Enlight will deal with multifaceted challenges in close interaction with the universities’ local socio-economic environments and create ambitious, flexible network-wide curricula rooted in existing cutting-edge research activities and focused on innovation. To this end, Enlight will not only leverage the geographical, cultural, and linguistic diversity (with eleven official languages) of the network, but also build on longstanding collaborations in North-East Europe with the network U4Society and in South-West Europe with the Euskampus alliance.
