Research Area 1: Digital Transformation and Digital Innovation

Digital Transformation describes as a process, based on the use and continuous development of digital technologies, to enable major business improvements (such as enhancing customer experience, streamlining operations, or creating new business models) (Fitzgerald et al. 2013). This includes in particular the use of so called SMACIT technologies (social media, mobile, analytics, cloud, IoT) and other technologies such as artificial intelligence and block chain. Especially, incumbent firms in established industries need to anticipate the potential of digital transformation in order to adapt to changing customer expectations and to remain competitive in an increasing digitized world. Theses in the area of digital transformation can include qualitative or quantitative work regarding digital strategies, digital innovation, new business models, and other related topics. While bachelor theses are predominantly literature-based and thus methodically assigned to the procedures of literature studies and reviews, master theses are based on qualitative or quantitative empirical research methods.
Research Area 2: Business Analytics in the Financial Industry

The digitization and storage of various interactions between individuals and transactions between companies has led to the emergence of new and potentially useful data sets. Therefore, this topic area focuses on the processing and analysis of heterogeneous and often unstructured data sources. Theses in this subject area usually deal with the use of data from social media, news or other sources to investigate relevant questions from the financial sector or to support decision making. The research questions the work is based on can focus on the area of analytics (text mining, time series analysis, etc.), as well as focus on electronic finance (market reaction, risk measures, etc.). While bachelor theses are predominantly literature-based and thus methodically assigned to the procedures of literature studies and reviews, master theses are based on qualitative or quantitative empirical research methods.
Research Area 3: Digital Finance

Digital Finance describes the use of digital information and communication technologies as well as the associated change processes within the financial sector (Gomber et al. 2017). A distinction can be made between various Digital Finance business functions, such as Digital Payments, Digital Financial Advice and Digital Insurance. A second perspective describes the introduction and use of Digital Finance technologies and technological concepts such as SMACIT technologies (Social Media, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things) as well as Blockchain or Artificial Intelligence. Lastly, a distinction can be made between two actors within the Digital Finance area - traditional financial services providers and so-called FinTechs or InsurTechs, which are start-ups in the finance or insurance sector. Within this research area, we investigate how individual characteristics of these different perspectives are used to improve financial processes and how novel products, services and business models, enabled by IT, transform the financial markets.
