The origins of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology at the University of Bucharest date back to its inaugaration in 1881. Due to the political changes after World War 2, the Faculty was seperated from the University and was re-inaugurated as a Theological Institute, until it became part of the University of Bucharest once again in the academic year of 1991-1992.

The Faculty of Orthodox Theology is lead by the Ministry of National Education as well as the Romanian Orthodox Church in the person of the Archbishop of Bucharest, who leads the Faculty from a clerical point of view.

The quality of research and education at the Faculty is assured by its academic staff – professors, associate professors, lecturers and assistants – which is renowned both in and outside of Romania and which has the necessary experience to offer students theological education on a very high level. This education is organized in two main departments: the Department of Church History, Biblical Studies and Philology, and the Department of Systematic Theology, Practice and Sacred Art.

The roots of the Faculty of Theology “Andrei Șaguna” lie in the founding of a Theological School in Sibiu in 1786. Since that year, theological education has been present in Sibiu to this day. Between 1948 and 1990, the Theological School was known as the Theological Institute of Higher Education, until it became part of the University of Sibiu in 1991. After that, it was possible for the Faculty to engage in ecumenical relationships with institutes from other Christian traditions, for example with the Lutheran Theological Faculty in Sibiu or with the Faculty for Roman Catholic Theology at the University "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" in Iași.

The Faculty offers five different degree programs: Pastoral Theology for the training of future priests, Social Theology for the training of social assistants, Didactic Theology for the training of teachers of religion, as well as Historical Theology and Theology of Heritage, which is about the conservation and restoration of works of art.
