Ethical Thoughts in Modern Japan
Influenced by the West

The cases of Tetsuro Watsuji
and Keiichiro Hirano

Tetsuro Watuji was one of the most influential moral philosophers in Japan. He criticized an individualistic understanding of a human being and ethics. His criticism was influenced by Hegel and Marx and at the same time based on Confucianism and Buddhism. Prof. Irie will compare Watsuji's understanding of a human being with Keiichiro Hirano's "dividualism". Hirano is a contemporary novelist with his own, original understanding of a human being.
